Community – Chickens, Creativity, and Rubber Boots

Welcome to the Community Garden. Lovingly cared for by local residents.

And of course, let’s not forget the Põhjala princesses — our chickens. In the warmer months, they roam the garden; in winter, they retreat to a countryside farm.

Now and then, a suitor — a clever urban fox — pays a visit, but so far, he hasn’t breached the coop. He usually moves on to chase rabbits or rummage through Kopli’s bins, as city foxes do.

Next to the Põhjala Factory entrance stands a four-storey building, completed in 1974 when the rubber factory celebrated its 50th anniversary. Originally the administrative building, it’s now known as the Studio House — home to dozens of small businesses, including artists, designers, eateries, sound studios, and galleries.

The people of Põhjala form a strong community, coming together for clean-up days, hikes, coffee mornings, and the Sohvakadeemia (Sofa Academy) lecture series.

In the Studio House lobby, you can see iconic Põhjala rubber products on display — including the famous botikud and goloshes, fondly remembered by many.

Feel free to step inside and take a look around!
